In brief
A tragic landslide occurred in Jinping village, located in Sichuan province, south-western China, resulting in at least one confirmed death and leaving 28 people missing. The incident took place on Saturday at around 11:50 local time, burying 10 houses and trapping numerous residents. Although two individuals have been rescued, the urgent search for survivors continues.
A command center has been established at the disaster site, with hundreds of emergency workers deployed to assist in the rescue efforts. Images from state media illustrate a massive landslide of mud and rock that swept through the village. President Xi Jinping has called for an exhaustive search operation to locate those still trapped, emphasizing the need to minimize casualties and effectively manage the aftermath of the disaster. The Ministry of Emergency Management has reported the evacuation of approximately 200 residents. In addition, Premier Li Qiang has insisted on an investigation into the geological hazards in surrounding areas, as villagers reported seeing large rocks rolling down the mountain over the past six months. Efforts are also being made to evacuate other residents at risk of potential landslides. To assist in recovery efforts, fifty million yuan (approximately $6.9 million) has been allocated from the central government for infrastructure repairs and public services in the affected area. The mountainous regions of south-west China are notorious for their susceptibility to landslides, with a similar incident in Yunnan province earlier this year claiming dozens of lives.
