In brief

On November 5, a cyberattack targeted the cooling system of France’s national blood bank in Paris, raising temperatures in the refrigeration units but leaving samples unharmed. Credit Mutuel Arkea also reported fraudulent transactions linked to the breach, though it says customers’ funds are secure. The incident follows a broader pattern of attacks on refrigeration units across Europe.

On Wednesday, November 5, a cyberattack targeted the cooling system of France’s national blood bank in Paris, according to Xinhua. Operators at the Établissement Français du Sang (EFS) reported that the refrigeration units were manipulated remotely, causing temperatures to rise to very high levels before staff detected the abnormal change and took corrective action.

The heightened temperatures occurred in storage facilities where blood products and biosamples are kept before distribution to hospitals and clinics. Xinhua reported that the rapid detection and response ensured no samples or blood products had been affected, and that the bank could continue normal operations.

In the same week, French banking group Credit Mutuel Arkea confirmed that a cyberattack had triggered a series of fraudulent transactions, though it said customers’ funds remained safe. The group temporarily suspended certain transactions as a precaution upon detecting the breach.

Both incidents follow a trend of cyberattacks that have recently targeted the refrigeration units of supermarkets and other establishments across Europe, raising concerns about the vulnerability of essential cold‑chain infrastructure.
