In brief

With Halloween spending expected to exceed $11 billion, experts emphasize the need for sustainability in the face of increasing waste. Here are some tips for a greener celebration.

As Halloween approaches, American consumers are projected to spend over $11 billion this year on an array of items including candy, costumes, and a plethora of elaborate decorations like inflatable ghouls and massive cobwebs. Unfortunately, much of this expenditure contributes to a significant amount of waste, with many of these items destined for landfills shortly after the festivities conclude."It's evolved significantly over the years into a holiday that generates a considerable amount of waste," remarked Sabina Magliocco, an anthropology professor at the University of British Columbia and a Halloween enthusiast known for her quirky costume of dressing as roadkill. However, she notes, there are effective strategies available to celebrate this spooky occasion more sustainably.Traditionally, Halloween is steeped in folklore wherein the barrier between the living and the deceased is thought to dissipate. In ancient Britain and Ireland, it was customary for ancestral spirits to visit the living, prompting people to offer food and drink to avoid offending these phantoms. However, the post-World War II era saw a significant transformation, with Halloween becoming a largely commercial event. This shift led to the mass production of costumes, candy, and community celebrations.Creative and eco-friendly solutions are emerging, allowing families and friends to lessen their footprint during the holiday while still embracing the spirit of Halloween. Engaging in these practices can ensure that the festive atmosphere remains intact, while also reducing the waste generated from this popular celebration.
