The gathering, which reportedly included seating arrangements and alcohol, was described by a local resident as nothing short of disgraceful. This incident has prompted City officials to issue a statement denouncing such behavior as disrespectful to the deceased and disruptive to grieving families.
Witnesses described the scene upon entering the cemetery, noting that it resembled a shebeen, with car boots open, people drinking, and litter scattered across the grounds. City officials highlighted that this conduct is unacceptable and reminded the public that cemeteries are sacred places meant only for burials and remembrance.
The City of Windhoek reaffirmed that any littering or waste left behind would be treated as a criminal offense and emphasized the implementation of strict monitoring to uphold the sanctity of the burial sites. The city declared, Social gatherings, alcohol consumption, and littering within cemetery grounds are strictly prohibited.
