In brief

With an average of $3.16 per gallon nationally, gasoline prices have plummeted by 11 percent compared to last year, marking a significant relief for consumers in a challenging economic landscape.

Although global markets fluctuate, the gasoline prices in the U.S. are currently at their lowest average since February, a notable return following the months of inflation driven by geopolitical tensions. The American Automobile Association (AAA) reports that average prices have dipped below $3 a gallon in 19 states, including key electoral battlegrounds like Georgia, North Carolina, and Wisconsin. This decline has made it easier for voters to fill their tanks in the lead-up to the presidential election, an event where fuel prices often surface as a key economic indicator. Americans are currently allocating about 2 percent of their disposable income towards gasoline—lower than what was observed before most recent presidential elections, with the exception of the 2020 election, influenced by pandemic-driven oil price collapses. In response to the favorable economic news, Vice President Kamala Harris has lauded the drop in gas prices, crediting the Biden administration’s strategies, which include the sale of fuel from the national reserve and adjustments in gasoline production standards, for this positive shift.
