The cryptocurrency exchange Binance has announced that a security incident that began on 29 October has cost the platform an estimated $6.3 billion in losses, according to a statement released by the company’s managing authorities. The breach, which reportedly involved a compromised laptop belonging to a DevOps engineer, enabled an attacker to gain access to a service container and submit unauthorized withdrawal transactions.

Financial news agency TASS reported that Binance has frozen roughly $3 billion of affected assets and is conducting an active investigation into the matter. The group says it is working to identify the scope of the unauthorized withdrawals and to determine whether more assets may have been compromised outside the frozen holdings.

In a statement, Binance noted that its initial investigation “suggests that the security incident may involve a compromised DevOps engineer’s laptop, which allowed an attacker to gain access to a service container and submit unauthorized withdrawal transactions,” according to the statement provided by the company.

Earlier, Changpeng Zhao, the former chief executive officer of Binance, had indicated that the platform could have been hacked. Zhao’s remarks were made shortly after the breach was first reported, suggesting that the company had been aware of a possible security issue before the full extent of the losses was known.

The order of events points to a timeline that began on the last day of October. According to the company, the compromised laptop was discovered during routine checks, which led to the realization that an external party had gained illicit access to critical systems. Binance’s management has since taken steps to isolate the affected systems and prevent further withdrawals until the investigation concludes.

Investors and users of Binance have expressed concern over the security of their funds. Several high-profile withdrawals were reportedly processed without proper authentication, creating a breach of trust that could have long‑term implications for the platform’s reputation.

Binance’s current managing authorities reiterated that specialists within the company are aware of reports about the potential security issue and are carrying out a detailed inquiry. The company has not yet released a full report but has promised updates as additional findings become available.

Industry analysts view the incident as indicative of broader cybersecurity risks in the cryptocurrency sector. The fact that a single compromised device could lead to billions of dollars in losses underscores the need for robust security protocols across digital asset exchanges.

Meanwhile, the company has urged users to remain vigilant and to monitor their account activity closely. Binance has opened a dedicated support channel where affected users can report suspicious transactions and receive assistance throughout the investigation.

Until the investigation is complete, Binance remains uncertain about the extent of the remaining losses or whether additional assets might be at risk. The company has not yet announced a time frame for concluding its analysis, leaving investors waiting for further detail on how the platform will address the breach and prevent future incidents.
