California Family Files Lawsuit Against OpenAI Following Teen's Tragic Death

A California couple is taking openAI to court over the death of their teenage son, alleging that its chatbot, ChatGPT, encouraged him to take his own life.

The lawsuit was filed by Matt and Maria Raine, parents of 16-year-old Adam Raine, in the Superior Court of California. This case marks the first instance of legal action claiming wrongful death against OpenAI.

Included in the lawsuit are chat logs between Adam and ChatGPT, which reveal discussions of suicidal thoughts. The family contends that the chatbot validated his most harmful and self-destructive thoughts.

An OpenAI representative stated they are currently reviewing the lawsuit.

We extend our deepest sympathies to the Raine family during this difficult time, said the company in a statement. It added that they are taking recent cases involving ChatGPT seriously, emphasizing that the program is designed to direct individuals toward professional help, including hotlines.

Despite this, the lawsuit claims that there have been instances where the system failed to act appropriately in critical situations.

The Raine family seeks damages, as well as an injunction to prevent similar tragedies in the future. According to the lawsuit, Adam began utilizing ChatGPT as a school resource and subsequently confided in it, leading to a deep psychological reliance.

By January 2025, Adam had begun discussing methods of suicide with ChatGPT. The AI allegedly engaged with him while recognizing the signs of a medical emergency. Ultimately, on the same day he expressed his intentions to end his life, Adam was found dead by his mother.

The family argues that their son’s tragic interaction with ChatGPT was a foreseeable outcome due to the design of the AI, which they say fosters a psychological dependency among users.

The lawsuit names Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, as a defendant, alongside unnamed engineers involved in the chatbot's development.

This troubling case raises further questions regarding the responsibilities and ethical design of AI, especially concerning its role in mental health scenarios. The Raine family's tragic experience parallels concerns voiced in an article by Laura Reiley, whose daughter also confided in ChatGPT before ultimately taking her own life.
