In brief

Britain's government criticizes Israel's actions as counterproductive and unacceptable.

Israel has come under fire after denying entry to two British lawmakers, Abtisam Mohamed and Yuan Yang, from the Labour Party. The MPs planned a trip to the Israeli-occupied West Bank to visit humanitarian projects and local communities, but were turned away at Ben Gurion International Airport and sent back to London. Expressing their disbelief, they characterized their visit as a parliamentary delegation aimed at addressing the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict and advocating for adherence to international humanitarian law.The Israeli authorities, however, rejected this characterization, asserting that the MPs were not part of an official delegation and were questioned due to their perceived intentions to disseminate hate speech against the nation. In response to their exclusion, British Foreign Secretary David Lammy described Israel's treatment of the lawmakers as “unacceptable” and “deeply concerning,” highlighting the need for respectful engagement with British parliamentarians. Both lawmakers, who entered Parliament for the first time in July, were caught in a growing political controversy. Under the current Labour government, there has been a shift away from previously unquestioning support for Israel, notably reflected in their recent suspension of some arms exports to the country after warnings about potential violations of humanitarian law. Meanwhile, Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch defended Israel’s decision, blaming the MPs for their exclusion, a stance that faced backlash from other political figures in the UK.This incident comes at a sensitive time as tensions continue to rise in Gaza, drawing further scrutiny on the international community's role and responses in the ongoing conflict.
