China Carries Out Death Penalty for Driver in Deadly Car Attack

A driver has been executed for a horrific car attack that left dozens dead in southern China.

In a shocking incident on November 11, 2024, Fan Weiqiu, a 62-year-old man, drove his vehicle into a group of people exercising outside a stadium in Zhuhai, resulting in the deaths of at least 35 individuals and injuring many others. The Chinese state media confirmed that Fan was executed following his conviction for "endangering public safety." The court revealed that Fan's actions stemmed from grievances related to his divorce and the distribution of property. The court characterized his motives as "extremely vile" and the methods "particularly cruel." This tragic event was noted as the deadliest attack in China in a decade, and it was part of a series of 19 similar assaults targeting strangers throughout the country in 2024, with two occurring within a week of the Zhuhai disaster.
