A freight train transporting the highly toxic chemical benzene derailed near Hustopeče nad Bečvou, approximately 50 kilometers south-west of the Polish border, leading to a significant fire that has alarmed local authorities and residents. The incident transpired on Friday, igniting a situation where several rail tankers and the locomotive were engulfed in flames, which sent a towering plume of dense black smoke into the sky, visible from miles away.
In response to the dangerous situation, firefighters from surrounding regions and a mobile chemical monitoring unit were deployed to the scene. Fortunately, reports indicate that there were no injuries due to the incident. The train reportedly “split apart” prior to derailing, which also caused a nearby electric substation to catch fire, cutting power to the Hustopeče area.
Eyewitness accounts describe flames shooting up to 20 meters high at the onset of the blaze. Dramatic aerial footage released by the Czech fire service highlights the extent of damage to the train. Emergency responders utilized foam to suppress the fire and applied hoses to cool down other tankers to prevent further explosions. Their efforts extended for several hours before the fire was ultimately brought under control.
The train carried a total of 17 benzene tanks, impacting around 15 of them during the fire, each holding approximately 60 tonnes of the toxic substance. Hasiči Olomouc, the local fire department, stated that while the tanks contained the same substance, it does not guarantee all would burn or leak.
Authorities have advised local residents to stay indoors and keep windows and doors closed as a precaution against potential air quality issues. However, officials mentioned that currently, the air quality remains within acceptable pollution limits. Meanwhile, police have commenced an investigation into the wreck’s cause.
Benzene, a colorless or light-yellow liquid with a sweet aroma, is heavily used in everyday products, including plastics and dyes, but can pose significant health risks. The CDC warns that exposure may lead to various health problems, ranging from dizziness and drowsiness to severe consequences like unconsciousness or death with extremely high levels of exposure. Long-term exposure can result in serious health implications impacting blood, bone marrow, and the immune system.
