In brief

Federal prosecutors have stated that Dr. Salvador Plasencia has agreed to plead guilty to four counts, potentially leading to a sentence of up to 40 years in prison, following the actor’s tragic overdose.

Dr. Salvador Plasencia, the California physician implicated in the tragic overdose of "Friends" star Matthew Perry, has agreed to plead guilty to distributing the powerful anesthetic ketamine. Federal prosecutors announced the plea deal, which includes four counts of distribution that could culminate in a maximum of 40 years in prison. The hearing is anticipated in the coming weeks. Matthew Perry, aged 54, was discovered unresponsive in his hot tub on October 2023, sparking widespread mourning among fans worldwide. Known for his role as Chandler Bing, Perry had been candid about his battles with addiction and mental health, making the unexpected nature of his death all the more shocking.Prosecutors revealed that text exchanges with Dr. Mark Chavez, another doctor who has already admitted guilt, showed Dr. Plasencia referred to Perry in derogatory terms and questioned how much he could charge for the illicit drugs. The plea document details that Plasencia administered ketamine to Perry both at his residence and in public areas, including the Long Beach Aquarium parking lot. Furthermore, the doctor instructed Perry's assistant—who faces charges in the case—on how to administer the drug and provided additional vials for personal use.Plasencia is among five individuals facing charges related to what authorities describe as an underground operation supplying ketamine to Perry. While the actor was prescribed the drug to combat his depression, he sought higher doses than authorized. Between September 30 and October 12, 2023, Plasencia reportedly sold twenty vials of ketamine, along with syringes, to Perry and his assistant. The attorney for Dr. Plasencia did not respond to requests for comments.
