In brief
Former President Donald Trump has characterized recent negotiations between the United States and Russia as a hopeful step towards ending the ongoing war in Ukraine, following dialogue between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US envoy Steve Witkoff.
In a recent post on Truth Social, Trump expressed optimism about the meetings, referring to them as “good and productive,” which he believes present a significant opportunity to terminate the ongoing conflict. The talks took place on Thursday night in Moscow, where Putin and Witkoff reportedly exchanged views on the diplomatic avenue led by the US for a potential ceasefire in Ukraine. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky remains skeptical. He has asserted that Russia is likely to continue the fighting and will dismiss the US's ceasefire proposal. “The world sees how Russia is intentionally creating hurdles that prolong the war,” he stated in an update on social media. Zelensky elaborated that while Putin might not outright reject a ceasefire, he tends to complicate negotiations, leading to prolonged conflicts. Earlier this week, Ukraine acknowledged the US's ceasefire proposal, but Russia hasn't yet provided its approval. Zelensky stressed that a “swift exchange of prisoners and a 30-day unconditional ceasefire” could pave the way toward a lasting peace solution. Meanwhile, press representatives from the White House affirmed that the nation is closer to achieving peace than ever before, with Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt reiterating the productivity of the discussions in Moscow. Trump has also urged Putin to spare the lives of Ukrainian soldiers encircled in the Kursk region, labeling potential mass casualties as a tragedy not witnessed since WWII. The area has been contested since Ukraine's invasion last year, with Russia claiming dominion and announcing the reclamation of 28 regions within Kursk. G7 nations are currently convening in Quebec, where Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly announced unanimous support for the US-backed ceasefire proposal. Joly emphasized that the onus is now on Russia to respond. UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy expressed solidarity in urging for an unconditional ceasefire. Following these discussions, UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is set to host a video conference with multiple nations to foster a peacekeeping coalition aimed at securing a long-term resolution in Ukraine. In a tense atmosphere riddled with uncertainty, the steps taken by both the US and their allies will be pivotal in determining the trajectory of peace efforts in the war-torn region.
