In brief

A United Nations investigation has accused Israel of committing war crimes through deliberate assaults on medical facilities and personnel in Gaza, intensifying the humanitarian crisis.

United Nations investigators released a report on Thursday accusing Israel of executing "relentless and deliberate attacks" on healthcare facilities, medical personnel, and wounded civilians in the Gaza Strip. These actions, according to the report, constitute war crimes and crimes against humanity, particularly extermination. The U.N. document underscores that Israel carried out these attacks as part of collective punishment against Palestinians following assaults initiated by Hamas on Israel a year prior, on October 7, from Gaza. The siege that ensued from Israel's response, the report elaborates, resulted in the blockade of critical supplies like food, fuel, water, and medical aid to Gaza's hospitals. Additionally, patient transfers for necessary medical treatments outside Gaza have faced severe restrictions. Navi Pillay, head of the commission that developed the report, demanded an immediate halt to these actions, highlighting the "unprecedented wanton destruction of healthcare facilities in Gaza."Pillay, formerly the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, asserts that Israel's actions amount to a systematic effort to dismantle Gaza's healthcare infrastructure, which is seen as part of a broader military strategy targeting the area. In contrast, Danny Danon, Israel's ambassador to the United Nations, rebuffed these claims as unfounded, suggesting that the U.N. should concentrate on probing the offenses committed by Hamas, including the taking of hostages on the day of the attacks.
