The body of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the world‑record holder for being the youngest reigning monarch, was flown back to Uganda following his death in the United States last week. The 34‑year‑old monarch “ascended the throne at the age of three and was crowned when he turned eighteen” and had been a symbol of modernisation within the Tooro community.
Presidential dignitaries, including Yoweri Museveni, attended a brief ceremony at Entebbe airport where the coffin, draped in the Tooro and Ugandan flags, was collected. It was then transported by military helicopter to Kyegegwa, and finally to the Karambi Royal Palace in Fort Portal for a state lying‑in‑state before the burial scheduled for Saturday.
The official mourning period of nine days will have the palace open to the public, allowing citizens to pay their respects and attend nightly prayer services. A church funeral will precede the procession to the royal tombs, which are expected to be sealed by 2 p.m. local time.
The death has ignited a succession dispute. While the Tooro monarchy traditionally follows a hereditary selection process, elevated tensions arose after the king’s prime minister hinted he was aware of a son that may be the heir. Some senior clan members, however, claim they have no knowledge of such a child. This disagreement has prompted a call for an internal resolution to avoid further division.
Cultural Ministry spokesperson Henry Tumukunde urged the public to rely on official statements and avoid spreading rumours about the succession on social media. Parliament, led by Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, offered tributes praising the king’s advocacy for education, health and youth empowerment, noting that “heritage and development were never rivals in his hands.”
The passing of the Tooro king marks a significant moment for Uganda’s traditional institutions, which retain strong cultural relevance despite lacking political power. As the nation mourns, the focus remains on honoring the legacy of a leader who, despite his youth, endeavoured to strengthen his people through modernisation and social causes.
