In brief
After a camping mishap left Valerie missing, local wildlife rescuers employed innovative strategies, including creating a scent trail with the owner's clothing, leading to her remarkable rescue and a heartwarming reunion with her owners.
In an inspiring tale of endurance and hope, a miniature dachshund named Valerie has been discovered alive after an incredible 529 days spent in the rugged wilderness of Kangaroo Island, Australia. The dedicated team at Kangala Wildlife Rescue reported that they worked tirelessly to locate the missing dog, who was last seen during a camping trip by her owners, Georgia Gardner and Joshua Fishlock, in November 2022.The couple had temporarily left Valerie secure in a playpen while they went fishing, but when they returned, she had vanished. Valerie's survival for nearly a year and a half amidst harsh conditions and dangerous wildlife was largely attributed to the innovative use of Ms. Gardner's t-shirt, which created a scent trail to lead a trap set by rescue volunteers.Kangala Wildlife Rescue took to social media to announce Valerie's safe return, confirming that dedicated volunteers had logged over 1,000 hours searching for her, covering more than 5,000 kilometers (3,109 miles) in the process. The rescue team used a trap cage equipped with a remote-operated door, filled with food and personal items belonging to Valerie, including some cherished toys and worn items of her owner's clothing.Lisa Karran, one of the directors at Kangala, explained the final stages of Valerie’s rescue, detailing how she wore remnants of Ms. Gardner's clothes to soothe the dog as she approached after Valerie was caught in the trap. Initially, the search had a challenging start when other campers spotted her hiding under a parked car; this encounter caused Valerie to flee into the bushland, making the rescue even more difficult.Months into the search, island locals reported sightings of a dog with a matching pink collar, giving hope to the rescue effort. Jared Karran, another director at Kangala, expressed his astonishment at Valerie's survival skills, considering her breed. The rescue team's patience paid off, as they patiently waited for Valerie to be in the trap's right position before triggering the door mechanism.Following the rescue, Ms. Gardner shared her overwhelming joy and sentiments on social media, urging others who have lost pets to hold on to hope. "Sometimes good things happen to good people," she reflected, encapsulating the relief and happiness following Valerie's miraculous return to her family.
