In brief

In a significant public health response, Lahore's primary schools will remain closed for a week due to alarming pollution levels surpassing benchmarks for safety.

As air quality in Lahore deteriorates, the local government has taken decisive action to mitigate health risks and enforce a temporary lockdown. Pakistani authorities have announced the closure of all primary schools in Lahore for one week, responding to a dramatic spike in air pollution that has made the city one of the most polluted in the world for the second time in recent days. From Monday, half of all office workers will also transition to remote work as part of a broader "green lockdown" initiative. Authorities have introduced additional measures, including prohibiting engine-powered rickshaws and barbecue vendors using non-filtered equipment.Punjab's Senior Minister, Marriyum Aurangzeb, expressed concerns regarding the impact of the smog on children's health, advocating for mandatory mask-wearing in schools. On Saturday, Lahore recorded an air quality index exceeding 1,000, far beyond the World Health Organization's danger threshold of 300, signifying a serious public health crisis.Raja Jehangir Anwar, an environmental official, attributed the severe smog levels to crop waste burning across the border in India, stressing that strong winds are carrying these toxic emissions into Pakistan. Aurangzeb emphasized that collaboration with India is essential to address the underlying pollution problem. The local government is advising residents to remain indoors and reduce travel, while vehicles spraying water are deployed to alleviate the smog issue. Construction activities in certain regions have been suspended, and a reassessment of the situation will take place next Saturday to determine if school closures will extend.Health experts warn that exposure to polluted air can lead to severe health issues, including respiratory diseases, heart conditions, strokes, and lung cancer. Last month, authorities had already limited outdoor activities for children and adjusted school hours to safeguard them from the peak pollution times. As local resident Lilly Mirza expressed her concerns, saying, "As a mother, I am full of anxiety," it is evident that the public is increasingly alarmed by the severe decline in air quality compared to previous years. The winter months often exacerbate the smog crisis, as cooler air traps pollutants near the ground, affecting the well-being of the city's population.
