The UN human rights office has issued a damning report accusing Israel of 'systemic discrimination' against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, stating that conditions have considerably worsened over the past three years. The High Commissioner, Volker Türk, warned that the policies and practices enforced by Israeli authorities impose a critical impact on Palestinians' everyday lives, leading to significant violations of human rights and international law, particularly concerning racial discrimination. Moreover, Türk highlighted the nature of these policies as reminiscent of apartheid systems seen in South Africa, which Israel has branded as 'absurd' and lacking factual basis. The report indicates that Israeli settlers and Palestinians are treated under distinct legal frameworks, facilitating inequality in various crucial aspects, including land access and resource utilization. Following the escalation of violence after attacks in October 2023, the report states that discrimination has reached alarming levels, with settlements expanding and further entrenching oppressive segregation.
