In brief

Emily Damari, a British-Israeli hostages' journey symbolizes resilience and hope after enduring 15 months of captivity and severe injuries. Despite her struggles, she remains determined to heal and calls for the release of all remaining hostages.

Emily Damari, a British-Israeli woman who spent 15 harrowing months as a hostage of Hamas, is now sharing her story of survival and recovery. Released recently, Damari expressed that her scars are emblematic of "freedom, hope and strength" as she undergoes surgery for her serious injuries sustained during the traumatic attack on October 7, 2023. At only 28 years old, she suffered life-altering injuries when she was shot in the hand and leg while being forcibly taken from her home in Kibbutz Kfar Aza. The brutal assault resulted in the loss of two fingers and an "open, festering wound" that took months to heal due to the unsanitary conditions of her captivity. After months of suffering, she underwent operations at Israel's Sheba Medical Center, which she noted went "much better than expected".Reflecting on her experiences, Damari stated she had "fully embraced" the pain and injuries due to their significant personal meaning. While expressing optimism about her recovery and physiotherapy efforts for better hand function, she recognized the long road ahead and the grim fate of other hostages, calling the conditions of their detention "unimaginable".Damari's mother described her daughter’s condition after capture with distress, emphasizing that it was a miracle she didn’t suffer from a life-threatening infection. Both mother and daughter are eager to see the remaining hostages freed and plan to visit the UK once they can. Her gratitude is further fueled by support she received during her ordeal, and she expressed excitement about the personal connections she wishes to foster post-recovery.Additionally, in the wake of the attacks, which triggered significant loss of life and a violent conflict in Gaza, Damari's voice adds to the calls from families for the humane treatment and release of all hostages still held by Hamas.
