In brief
Seven individuals were injured in the South Korean village of Nogok after two fighter jets mistakenly bombed the area during a joint military exercise with the United States.
In a startling incident during a joint military exercise with the U.S., two South Korean fighter jets mistakenly dropped bombs on the village of Nogok, located near the North Korean border on Thursday. The bombing left seven people injured and caused significant damage to local homes and a church. Initial investigations by the South Korean military revealed that inaccuracies in the pilots' coordinates led to the misfiring. The jets, part of an annual exercise known as Freedom Shield, were supposed to target a designated range, but the error resulted in at least one bomb hitting the village directly. Among the injured, two individuals sustained serious injuries, although none are reported to be in critical condition. Local officials, including those from Pocheon, where Nogok is situated, confirmed the situation and stated that live-fire drills would be halted pending further investigation.Witnesses described the event as an “earthquake-like” explosion, with one local shop owner recounting how her windows were shattered. Photos released by news outlets depicted extensive damage to residential buildings and local infrastructure, including a Catholic church. The South Korean Air Force has apologized for the mistake and promised compensation to the affected residents. As military drills continue, the U.S. maintains a significant presence in South Korea with approximately 28,500 troops, and ongoing exercises are often criticized by North Korea, which views them as provocations. The Freedom Shield exercises, which feature smaller drills leading up to larger ones, are set to officially commence on Monday and will run for 11 days. The exercises have historically drawn ire from North Korean leaders, including Kim Yo-jong, who recently accused the U.S. of hostility toward North Korea in the context of continued military collaboration between Washington and Seoul.
