Two drones were spotted hovering over a German military base in Mechernich just days after a bomb was found in a delivery locker at Leipzig/Halle airport.

Bundeswehr officials confirmed the aircraft were seen on Thursday evening near the check‑in gate of a base that houses parts used to maintain U.S. Patriot air‑defence batteries. The site is situated close to Bonn and serves as a staging area for NATO operations and Ukraine’s supply of Antonov cargo aircraft.

A spokesperson for the Joint Force Command said military police were sent to secure the perimeter before local police took over the investigation. The event is the latest in a series of drone sightings around civil and military infrastructure that European states have linked to Russian involvement in the Ukraine conflict.

Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt told Bild that Germany “has become a regular target of destabilising attacks” and that “we are the daily target of hybrid warfare.”

Investigations, led by the Bundeswehr and local police, are underway to determine how the drone carrying explosives accessed Leipzig/Halle’s runway – a shared NATO, German military, and Ukrainian airfield. The bomber was found in a locker that the European Union monitors for illicit weapons.

The incident arrives amid President Volodymyr Zelensky’s appeals to allies for more Patriot missiles after Ukrainian soldiers warned that interceptor shortages were costing lives. Earlier this month, U.S. President Donald Trump denied a pending agreement to license Patriot production to Ukraine.

European officials have pointed to Russia as the suspect in a spate of drone incursions, an accusation Moscow has denied as “absurd.” The continent remains on high alert, with discussions underway about a continent‑wide “drone wall” of air defenses to protect vital infrastructure.
