Vanuatu's officials are now contemplating the revocation of Andrew Tate's citizenship, prompted by investigations highlighting his involvement in serious criminal allegations, including rape and human trafficking. Tate, a notorious influencer known for his misogynistic views, acquired his "golden passport" in December 2022, just before his arrest in Romania, sparking alarm among Vanuatu's leadership, who aim to maintain the integrity of their citizenship by investment program.
According to the Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project, Tate obtained his Vanuatu citizenship through a fast-track scheme that requires a minimum investment of $130,000 (£96,000). This scheme has come under scrutiny due to its association with organized crime and questionable individuals, leading to the European Union’s decision to revoke visa-free travel from Vanuatu effective late 2024.
Kiery Manassah, a spokesperson for the Vanuatu government, stated authorities are investigating Tate's case thoroughly. "Once we have the files, definitely, the processes will be in place to revoke his citizenship," he remarked, emphasizing that the nation does not wish to attract individuals with questionable pasts. He noted the importance of ensuring that those sought by international law enforcement are not granted citizenship.
Concern has been mounting over the potential abuse of investment-based citizenship schemes by individuals linked to criminal activities. Aubrey Belford, the Pacific lead editor at OCCRP, highlighted how these loopholes allow people to evade law enforcement and acquire new identities.
Andrew Tate, alongside his brother Tristan, has faced restrictions on travel in Romania since their arrest. Vanuatu lacks a formal extradition treaty with Romania, complicating any potential legal cooperation. It remains uncertain whether Tristan Tate has also secured Vanuatu citizenship.
Originally from the United States, the Tate brothers moved to Luton, UK after their parents' divorce. As Tate's notoriety grows, especially among young males influenced by his views, UK authorities have sought extradition for charges related to multiple criminal offenses dating back to 2012. Despite the legal questions surrounding them, both brothers maintain their innocence, pledging to return to the UK to face the accusations when the time comes.
