For nearly two months, federal agents have been carrying out surprise raids in Chicago in pursuit of the Trump administration’s immigration agenda, emerging from unmarked vehicles in neighborhoods throughout the city to confront and detain stunned members of the public.

The arrests have been aggressive and even violent, with agents reportedly striking restrained individuals, deploying tear gas outside schools, and pointing pepper spray at onlookers who gather in protest.

A palpable culture of fear has settled in, particularly within predominantly Latino communities, where many inhabitants are too scared to leave their homes. Social media and local interviews reveal profound shock at the agents’ widespread use of force.

Since its inception in early September, “Operation Midway Blitz” has led to over 3,300 arrests, as documented by attorneys for those detained. The operations have failed to discriminate, ensnaring both those undocumented as well as U.S. citizens.

The tactics deployed by agents have been alarmingly random, targeting a myriad of high- and low-income neighborhoods. Arrests have occurred at schools, workplaces, grocery stores, and even Millennium Park, a popular landmark.

Local residents have mobilized efforts to defend their neighbors, documenting federal actions through their phones. Videos obtained by the Associated Press showcase startling encounters, with citizens rallying to protect themselves and others amidst the influx of federal agents.

In the East Side neighborhood of Chicago’s far South Side, Jose Aguilar captured an arrest on video while urging for the protection of community members, as agents pursued individuals into a pharmacy. Witnesses reported tense confrontations as agents detained a teenager, prompting public outcry.

Nearby in Lakeview neighborhoods, agents employed tear gas, adding to existing tensions as residents pleaded for safety amidst chaos. They witnessed agents chase individuals down the streets, shattering the peace as construction workers fled from the scene.

On another day in Old Irving Park, a confrontation escalated when an individual fled from agents. The brother of the individual detained begged for his brother's release as the agents grew increasingly aggressive toward bystanders. Reports indicated that one elderly man suffered injuries due to excessive force.

Resistance has been palpable across various Chicago suburbs. In Evanston, an incident unfolded with videos showing a dramatic clash between Border Patrol agents and local residents, who vocally opposed the agents' forceful methods.

The local community stands in solidarity against what they consider disgraceful tactics, mounting pressure as more witnesses and supporters gather to defend their peers from federal aggression.

Authorities from the Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement have yet to provide any comment on the incidents, despite the troubling reports and growing public concern over the actions taken by their operatives.
