One of Donald Trump's most influential aides has stated that Greenland should become part of the US to enhance NATO protection and secure the Arctic region. In an interview with CNN, Stephen Miller confirmed that the US would not use force to annex Greenland, asserting that nobody's going to fight the US over the future of Greenland. This controversial stance has sparked tension, particularly from Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, who emphasized that an attack on Greenland would jeopardize NATO.
Following Miller's comments, six European allies issued a statement supporting Denmark's position, asserting that Greenland belongs to its people, and only Denmark and Greenland should decide their future relations. Miller reiterated that it is the formal US government position that Greenland should be part of the United States, questioning Denmark's claim over the island.
This controversy has reignited concerns regarding US military intentions in Greenland, especially as Trump has sought to underscore the island's strategic importance for national security and resource acquisition. The Trump administration's intention to appoint a special envoy to Greenland has further incited anger in Denmark, where a majority of the population favors independence over becoming part of the US.
