The suspect in last week's mass shooting at Brown University has been found dead in a storage facility in Salem, New Hampshire, following a six-day multi-state manhunt, police say.

The individual, identified as Claudio Neves Valente, 48, a Portuguese national who studied at the university in Providence, Rhode Island, around 25 years ago, was linked to a shooting on December 13 that resulted in the deaths of two students.

Valente was identified after being connected through video evidence and tips leading police to a car-rental location correlated with his name.

Providence police chief Oscar Perez indicated that further inquiries suggest Valente may have also killed MIT professor Nuno F Gomes Loureiro, 47, just two days following the Brown shooting at the professor's home in Brookline, Massachusetts.

Initial findings from the investigation suggest Valente died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, though authorities remain tight-lipped about how long he had been in the storage facility.

Brown University president Christina Paxson confirmed that Valente was a former graduate student enrolled in a PhD program in physics and had no active ties to the university at the time of his death.

Further linking both crimes, officials say that Valente's vehicle was spotted in relation to both shootings, and evidence discovered in the vehicle aligns with the scene of the attack at Brown University.

Leah B Foley, the US state attorney for Massachusetts, noted that Valente utilized a phone that obscured tracking, highlighting his efforts to evade capture.

In response to the tragic events, the US has suspended its green card lottery scheme, cited by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem as potentially allowing individuals like Valente to enter the country.

The tragedy at Brown University, described as random violence, targeted students gathered for study sessions as final exams approached, leading to a heightened sense of urgency and concern in the community.

The investigation remains active as law enforcement officials continue to seek answers following the unfortunate loss of life and the mark left on the university campus.
