Montreal Gunman Leaves Officer, Civilian, and Himself Dead
A tense midday gunfight unfolded in Montreal’s Côte‑des‑Neiges neighbourhood when a lone suspect fired dozens of shots, killing a police officer, a civilian and himself immediately. The officer, 34‑year‑old Mohamed Lamine Benredouane, was rushed to hospital but later died, while the civilian victim, Michael Moshe Mizrahi, was found deceased near the scene. Police reported the suspect was shot on the spot, preventing further casualties.
Investigation Modus – Authorities say the attacker acted alone and a document circulated online allegedly urged citizens to target police officers. Though the RCMP has yet to confirm any direct link, the incident raises alarms over the influence of misogynistic “incel” online circles, especially after Canada’s 2018 Toronto vehicle‑ramming attack was tied to the same ideology.
The Quebec Ministry of Security remains uncertain on motive, noting that “the drive of the individual is still unclear.” Police forces across Canada received urgent alerts, explaining traffic stops and metro interruptions in the region.
Montreal Mayor Soraya Martinez‑Ferrada, Prime Minister Mark Carney and Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette all posted statements of solidarity and sorrow, affirming that “no one should ever bear the weight of such violence.” The city will fly flags at half‑staff to honour the fallen officer.
