A man has died near Athens as a storm hits parts of Greece with gale-force winds and flooding, while a Saharan dust storm enveloped the island of Crete.

The man was found under a car in the Nea Makri rural area early on Thursday, according to the fire department.

Storm Erminio has flooded streets, closed some schools, and moored ferries. Meanwhile, some flights were disrupted on Crete on Wednesday after dust from an African storm filled the air, turning the sky red-orange.

The national meteorological service has indicated that the weather is expected to remain severe on Thursday, with long-lasting and intense rains and storms, and possibly local hail across most areas of the country.

A red warning has been issued for Crete, particularly affecting the west and south regions, scheduled from midday until late Thursday night. The fire department reported receiving 674 calls for assistance, primarily from the Attica region surrounding Athens, with assistance requests centered around fallen trees.

High winds have grounded ferries in ports, although some service may resume the following day, weather permitting. The storm's impact has led to widespread flooding, including the basement of a local police station, while a bridge in Poros was reported to have collapsed and vehicles swept away.
