PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A tragic shooting incident occurred at Brown University, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to nine others. The violence erupted in the engineering building during final exams, causing a massive police presence on campus and in nearby neighborhoods.

Authorities have released surveillance footage showing the suspect, dressed in black, calmly leaving the scene. It is currently unclear if he is affiliated with the university. Witnesses described the shooter as possibly donning a camouflage mask and being in his 30s.

University President Christina Paxson reported that out of the 10 victims, most are students, though one additional individual was hurt by shrapnel.

The shooting led to a tense lockdown of the campus, with students instructed to shelter in place as the search for the shooter continued well into the night. Many students were escorted out of buildings and some were taken to nearby shelters, waiting anxiously for the situation to stabilize.

Providence Mayor Brett Smiley urged residents to remain indoors until the shelter-in-place order was lifted. The investigation is ongoing, and officials believe a handgun may have been used in the attack.

As the university community grapples with the aftermath of this event, Rhode Island’s Governor Dan McKee has pledged to allocate all necessary resources to track down the suspect.

A stark reminder of the dangers of gun violence, the shooting has left an indelible mark on Brown University, which is known for its prestigious academic standing and is home to around 10,000 students. Students recounted their terrifying experiences, with many seeking refuge under desks or in nearby businesses.
