LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (AP) — A man being questioned by police at a suburban Atlanta hotel on Sunday shot two officers after inviting them into his room, leading to the death of one of them and seriously wounding the other, authorities reported.
The alleged shooter, identified as Kevin Andrews, was also shot by an officer during the encounter and is currently receiving medical treatment. Gwinnett County Police Chief J.D. McClure confirmed that Andrews is expected to survive his injuries.
The incident occurred in the morning at a hotel near Stone Mountain, approximately 25 miles northeast of Atlanta. Officers were responding to a tip from a caller in another state about fraudulent use of their credit card at the hotel. Following this report, the front desk clerk directed law enforcement to Andrews' room.
Upon arrival, Andrews greeted the officers and permitted them inside. As the discussion progressed, he unexpectedly produced a handgun and fired upon the officers, McClure stated during a news conference. This unprovoked attack resulted in the tragic injury of our officers, he said.
Officer Pradeep Tamang, just 25 years old and a recent addition to the police force, succumbed to his injuries shortly after being transported to the hospital. Officer David Reed remains hospitalized in serious but stable condition.
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp expressed condolences via social media, acknowledging the persistent dangers faced by law enforcement officials in their line of duty. The investigation into the shooting has been handed over to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), who will determine appropriate charges against Andrews as the case proceeds.
