Organisers Sydney Marathon laughed off the error, saying “we’re not going to run from it” after the medal displayed Munich’s Allianz Arena on its reverse side.
During the week, the official social‑media account posted a close‑up of the medal, revealing the wrong stadium was etched. Germans noted the Allianz Arena’s signature diamond‑shaped cushions contrast with Sydney’s silver‑finned Allianz Stadium.
A spokesperson admitted the mistake was an “unfortunate error” and announced runners would receive the medal unchanged, calling it “a little more unique.”
German Instagram accounts responded with humour, joking that the medal “features Allianz Arena – maybe they swapped venues?” and calling the design “unique architecture”.
The reverse side of the medal is a gold and indigo pattern by First Nations artist Ambrose Killian, but he confirmed he did not design the side with the incorrect stadium.
About 40,000 athletes are expected to finish the 42.2km course on 30 August, after over 120,000 ballot entries, with organisers praising record participation and fundraising.
The incident has become a talking point, bringing global attention to the event and the medals’ unintended artistic flair.
