In brief

Russian forces struck six energy sites in Ukraine within hours of President Trump announcing an energy ceasefire. Zelensky said the attacks hit gas stations, nodes and rail links, causing blackouts in Izyum and western Ukraine. Thirty‑three people were injured, and the strikes appear to be a response to Washington’s signal that Russia should release diesel to the US. The ceasefire has drawn mixed reactions across Europe, with some leaders expressing support and others warning that Russia may not comply.

Russia struck six Ukrainian energy facilities hours after US President Donald Trump announced an energy ceasefire, President Volodymyr Zelensky said.

Despite Trump saying the truce is effective immediately, Zelensky warned that Russian strikes hit gas stations, energy infrastructure and other facilities.

The attacks caused blackouts in Izyum after a power grid destroyed in the city, and also targeted railway lines and power links in western Ukraine overnight.

Russia’s foreign minister said Ukraine does not deserve the respite a ceasefire would bring.

Zelensky told Fox News that 33 people were injured, blaming Putin’s response to Trump and describing the attacks as a new phase in the conflict.

The EU and other Western allies have signalled support for the ceasefire, but many officials remain skeptical about Russia’s compliance.
