Ratko Mladić, Convicted Bosnian Serb War Criminal, Dies at 84

Former "Butcher of Bosnia" Ratko Mladić died on 27 August 2026 in a United Nations prison in The Hague. He was 84.

In 2017, Mladić was sentenced to life imprisonment by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) for genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity committed between 1992 and 1995. The sentence was upheld on appeal in 2021.

After the Bosnian war, the commander evaded arrest for sixteen years before being apprehended in rural Serbia in 2011 and transferred to The Hague for trial.

Mladić was receiving palliative care at the UN prison hospital when he died. A UN court had previously rejected a request for his release in May 2026, recognising his dire condition but affirming that he was receiving "comprehensive and compassionate treatment" in prison.
