Denmark's foreign minister has summoned the top US diplomat in Copenhagen, following a report that American citizens have been conducting covert operations in Greenland. Denmark's public broadcaster DR quoted sources as saying the aim was to infiltrate Greenland's society and promote its secession from Denmark to the US, although it was unable to clarify who the men were working for.

Danish intelligence warned Greenland was being targeted by various kinds of influence campaigns. Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen stated, any attempt to interfere in the internal affairs of the Kingdom [of Denmark] will of course be unacceptable, emphasizing the seriousness of the issue.

The BBC has approached the US embassy and the state department for comments, but these developments have sparked discussions amidst previous comments from US President Trump, who has on multiple occasions expressed interest in annexing Greenland. The situation escalated further when Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen pushed back against the notion of annexation during a visit to Greenland.

Rasmussen acknowledged that foreign actors exhibit interest in Greenland's political status within the Kingdom of Denmark, suggesting that outside influence attempts are to be expected.

The relations between Denmark and the US are strained, particularly with Denmark being a long-time ally of the US and considering the ongoing discussions about Greenland's status. With various strategic interests in the region, the US's focus on Greenland remains significant in global geopolitics.
