In brief
The recent Israeli airstrike on Khan Younis seeks to eliminate Hamas figure Mohammad Sinwar, who has withstood multiple assassination attempts in the past. While Israel remains focused on dismantling Hamas leadership, the outcome of this specific attack remains uncertain.
The Israeli military conducted an airstrike on the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis on Tuesday evening, allegedly targeting Mohammad Sinwar, a prominent Hamas leader, according to Israeli military sources. The success of the operation remains unconfirmed as the military's practice is to verify the deaths of its targets over time, a task that often extends for weeks, sometimes even months, after an airstrike.Mohammad Sinwar is the younger sibling of Yahya Sinwar, who orchestrated the initial Hamas-led assaults on Israel that marked the beginning of the current conflict in Gaza in October 2023. Originally from Khan Younis, where his family took refuge during the 1948 Arab-Israeli war, Sinwar is believed to have joined Hamas in the early 1990s parallel to his brother’s rise within the organization. His early encounters with the law include being detained by the Israeli military in 1991 for alleged terrorism-related activities, after which he spent a short duration in custody. Subsequently, Mohammad was also imprisoned for several years in Ramallah under the Palestinian Authority's jurisdiction.Dubbed ‘the Shadow’ by some, Mohammad Sinwar has been on the radar of Israeli officials for years. Notably, reports suggest he was targeted in a minimum of six assassination attempts prior to 2021. As the conflict continues to unfold, Sinwar's fate remains uncertain amidst the complexities of Gaza’s turbulent landscape.
