Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has apologised for remarks he made about popstar Kylie Minogue in a podcast interview last week.
During a 20‑minute segment on the "Bush Deep" podcast hosted by comedian Nikki Osborne, Albanese was asked to rank celebrities such as Kylie Minogue, Nicole Kidman and Rhonda Burchmore in a ludicrous "shag, marry or date" scenario. Albanese initially sidestepped the question with, "I’m only six months in and just married Jodie," but after Osborne’s persistent follow‑up, he replied, "Oh, Kylie, clearly," and added that she "was terrific".
The comments triggered an immediate backlash. Several MPs labeled them "entirely inappropriate" and "disrespectful to women", while Shadow Communications Minister Sarah Henderson criticised the remarks as embarrassing to Australians and belittling to the office of Prime Minister. Community Strong MP Zali Steggall called for Albanese to "push back" against sexism and lead by example.
Responding on X, Albanese issued a one‑line statement: I apologise unequivocally for the comments. He further clarified that the remarks were a poor choice made out of a comedic context and that the government remains "completely committed" to elevating women in society. Acting Prime Minister Richard Marles, who presided over the government while Albanese was on a Pacific visit, emphasised that the government is the first to have gender parity in the Cabinet.
The episode underscores the need for public officials to maintain decorum when engaging with entertainment media and public figures, and it highlights the heightened scrutiny that leaders face in the age of social media.
