Condition improves: Helen Haines, the independent MP for Wangaratta, has moved from critical to serious and stable after the deliberate car attack on 23 October.

Haines, 65, was struck by a Toyota LandCruiser outside her electorate office. The vehicle forced two legs to be amputated, leaving her in ICU at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne.

The alleged driver, Brendan Nugent, 43, was arrested shortly after the incident and appeared in court today charged with dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury and harming a Commonwealth public official. Police say further charges, possibly attempted murder, may face the suspect.

Investigators, assisted by the Australian Federal Police, have not yet determined a motive and are probing possible drug or medication involvement.

Haines’ husband, Phil, said his wife’s “heart and mind” remain strong. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the incident as a sign of rising “temperature” and the need for better discourse in Australia.
