In brief

After a harrowing 36 hours on an alligator-infested swamp following a plane crash, five survivors have been successfully rescued in Bolivia's Amazonas region.

The small aircraft went missing for nearly two days before being spotted by local fishermen. The occupants included a 29-year-old pilot, three women, and a child, all of whom were reported to be in "excellent condition," according to Wilson Avila, director of the Beni Department's emergency operations center. The pilot, Andres Velarde, recounted the emergency landing near the Itanomas River, triggered by engine failure during a flight from northern Bolivia to the city of Trinidad.Velarde described the terrifying experience of standing atop the submerged plane while surrounded by alligators lurking within meters of them. Remarkably, he speculated that a leaking fuel may have deterred the predators. The group survived by consuming local cassava flour brought along by one of the passengers as they faced the dual threats of dehydration and alligator encounters. The search and rescue operation commenced after the aircraft failed to appear on radar, leading to increased urgency among local authorities. After the plane's discovery, a helicopter was dispatched to airlift the survivors to safety. In light of the incident, Ruben Torres, director of the Beni Region Health Department, expressed relief at the successful collaboration of various institutions in the rescue efforts, which dispelled speculation surrounding the plane's disappearance. This remarkable story of survival showcases the resilience of the human spirit in the face of danger in the heart of the Amazon rainforest.
