Peru’s constitutional court announced on Monday that it has annulled the 15‑year prison sentence imposed on former president Ollanta Humala after he was found guilty of corruption, effectively freeing him from Barbadillo Prison.
Humala, who led the nation from 2011 to 2016, had been convicted in 2025 on charges of receiving illicit funds from Venezuelan president Hugo Chávez and Brazilian construction firm Odebrecht to finance his 2006 and 2011 campaigns.
The ruling declares the entire criminal proceeding null and void, while his wife Nadine Heredia, also convicted of money laundering, had earlier been granted safe passage to Brazil after seeking asylum in the Brazilian embassy.
He remains the first of four former Peruvian presidents linked to the Odebrecht scandal; the others include Alejandro Toledo, Alan García and Pedro Pablo Kuczynski.
