In brief

Recent revelations indicate that hackers associated with China have infiltrated telecommunications systems to target high-profile individuals, including Jared Kushner and Eric Trump, as part of a broader counterintelligence effort. Alarming officials, the attack appears to focus on key people connected to U.S. policy-making.

Members of former President Donald J. Trump’s family, including his son Eric Trump, and aides from the Biden administration have reportedly fallen victim to a sophisticated hacking operation linked to China. According to sources familiar with the situation, these hackers gained unauthorized access to telecommunications company systems, forming part of an alarming counterintelligence effort that has drawn the attention of national security officials. The targeted list is reportedly comprised of fewer than 100 individuals, with a significant focus on communications that would likely pique the interest of the Chinese government. Prominent figures known to have their devices hacked include Donald Trump himself, his son Eric, and son-in-law Jared Kushner. Additionally, individuals affiliated with Vice President Kamala Harris's campaign and various diplomatic and governmental personnel whose names may not ring a bell to the general public but nonetheless possess critical insights into U.S. policy-making, were also on the hackers' radar. At this stage, it is unclear whether any sensitive data was successfully stolen from these key targets. Following the infiltration, Eric Trump publicly deflected blame towards the Biden administration, suggesting that under their leadership, China has been able to undermine the U.S.The Trump campaign team was alerted last week that devices used by both Mr. Trump and his running mate, Senator JD Vance of Ohio, were among those compromised through a breach involving Verizon’s phone systems. Similarly, other individuals who were targeted have reportedly received notifications from authorities regarding the breach. The implications of this breach extend beyond just current dynamics; they raise significant questions regarding the security of communications within the highest levels of U.S. government, with Democrats, including staff members to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, also identified as potential targets of this concerning hacking operation.
