Argentinian prosecutors have confirmed that one person who was with Payne at the time of the incident faces charges for abandonment resulting in death and involvement in drug activity. Additionally, a hotel employee and another individual have also been charged with drug supply offenses. Their identities remain undisclosed. Payne, recognized as a prominent figure in the music world following his stint on The X Factor and his success with One Direction, was 31 years old at the time of his death.

Investigations led by Argentinian authorities are focused on Payne's last days spent at CasaSur hotel, where toxicology reports have shown the presence of alcohol, cocaine, and a prescription antidepressant in his system. A post-mortem examination classified his death as due to "multiple trauma" and "internal and external haemorrhage" sustained from the fall. Authorities have conducted nine raids in the Buenos Aires area as part of the ongoing investigation, which also includes the examination of a damaged laptop and various devices belonging to Payne.
