Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has ordered an investigation into the role played by two US officials in a counter-narcotics operation in the northern state of Chihuahua, after the two died alongside two Mexican officials when their car crashed on their way back from the mission.
Sheinbaum stated that neither she nor senior members of the federal security team were informed about the joint operations with US officials, reinforcing that foreign personnel can only operate in Mexico if given prior federal approval.
Under pressure from US President Donald Trump to combat drug trafficking, Sheinbaum insisted on respecting Mexico's sovereignty. She noted that her government was not aware of any direct collaboration between the Chihuahua state and US embassy personnel.
Chihuahua State officials reported that the American victims were involved in instructing local officials and were returning from destroying illegal drug processing labs when their vehicle skidded and plunged into a ravine, leading to an explosion.
The Mexican government is demanding clarifications regarding the operation and if any national security laws were violated, stating that information has been requested from both the US embassy and local authorities to assess the implications of the incident.
