In brief

Brig. Gen. Vahidi, a controversial figure due to past allegations, steps into a crucial military role in Iran.

Iran has appointed Brig. Gen. Ahmad Vahidi as the new head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), following the tragic death of his predecessor, Gen. Hossein Salami, who was killed in an Israeli airstrike. This transition comes at a pivotal moment for the IRGC, tasked with safeguarding Iran's Islamic regime against both domestic and foreign threats.Brig. Gen. Vahidi's appointment raises eyebrows internationally due to his history and previous sanctions. Known largely for his alleged role in the 1994 bombing of a Jewish cultural center in Buenos Aires, which resulted in 85 fatalities and countless injuries, Vahidi has been the subject of international warrants issued by Argentinian authorities. As recently as 2007, Interpol placed a Red Notice highlighting this outstanding national arrest warrant.Born in 1958 in Shiraz, Iran, Vahidi's military career began amidst the 1979 Iranian revolution. While studying electronic engineering at Shiraz University, he joined the IRGC and quickly climbed the ranks. He spent a decade leading the Quds Force, the elite unit responsible for conducting intelligence and military operations overseas, from 1988 to 1998.His tenure in leadership roles expanded further as he became deputy defense minister in 2005, followed by a promotion to defense minister in 2009, a position he held until 2013. Up until August last year, he served as Iran's interior minister and has faced sanctions from the United States, the European Union, Canada, and the United Kingdom due to issues related to human rights abuses. As Vahidi steps into his new role, he faces immense pressure both domestically and internationally, where many are observing how his leadership will impact Iran's military strategies and global relationships moving forward.
