In light of the extreme demand for tickets to K-pop sensation BTS's upcoming concert series, Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum has taken action, reaching out to her South Korean counterpart to ask for additional concerts in Mexico.
I wrote a letter to the [president] of Korea... I still haven't received the answer, but let's hope it's positive, Sheinbaum stated on Monday.
BTS is expected to perform three shows in Mexico City this May as part of their extensive 79-date world tour after a four-year break. Local media reports indicate that tickets were sold out within just 40 minutes of release.
Fans have expressed frustration, accusing Ticketmaster of unfair pricing practices, which has prompted an investigation into their ticketing methods.
Ticket prices on Ticketmaster ranged from 1,800 pesos to 17,800 pesos (approximately $100 to $1,030), yet resale platforms were reportedly offering tickets for as much as 92,100 pesos, leading to scrutiny from Mexico's consumer watchdog.
More than one million young enthusiasts were vying for a mere 150,000 tickets, reflecting BTS's immense popularity, particularly among Mexican youth.
With Mexico being the fifth-largest market for K-pop, with a staggering 500% growth in streaming figures over the past five years, the demand for more BTS concerts is evident.
Sheinbaum's request follows consultations with Ocesa, the local concert promoter, who noted that BTS's packed itinerary might make it difficult to add more shows. So far, South Korea's presidential office and foreign ministry have not commented on the request.
BTS has not released new music since June 2022 while the group explored solo music careers and underwent mandatory military service. Anticipation is high for their comeback tour, which is expected to kick off in South Korea on April 9, before heading to Asia, Europe, and the Americas. According to Billboard, the tour is projected to gross over $1 billion across concerts, merchandise, and digital royalties.
