Prosecutors in the United States have accused Venezuela's former president Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, of conspiracy to commit torture.
The new charges were announced this Thursday, adding to the already‑faced drug‑trafficking and weapons accusations which the couple deny.
Maduro, 63, and Flores, 69, have been held in a Brooklyn detention centre since January after a U.S. raid on their Caracas compound seized them.
Human‑rights groups and former Venezuelan inmates allege systematic torture in state jails; the charges now focus on alleged torture of U.S. citizens detained there during Maduro’s tenure.
The trial is scheduled to start in June 2027.
