In brief

Firefighters battled a significant blaze after a freight train carrying hazardous benzene derailed in the Czech Republic. The incident, which occurred near Hustopeče nad Bečvou, approximately 50 km southwest of the Polish border, resulted in a dramatic fire that engulfed several tankers and the locomotive, sending a towering cloud of black smoke into the sky. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported from the derailment, which has raised concerns about the environmental impact and air quality in the surrounding area.

Firefighters from multiple regions, armed with foam and a mobile chemical laboratory, were deployed to combat the flames, which reached heights of up to 20 meters. Eyewitness accounts detail an alarming scene, with drone footage showcasing the destruction of the tankers and ongoing flames as emergency crews worked tirelessly. The fire prompted local authorities to instruct residents to remain indoors and avoid opening windows, despite current air quality levels remaining within acceptable pollution limits. Approximately 15 of the 17 benzene tanks were affected by the fire, with initial estimates suggesting around 60 tonnes of benzene per tanker. Authorities reported the incident has resulted in significant damages, totaling about 125 million Czech koruna (£4.1 million). Ongoing investigations are set to determine the cause of the derailment, as the environmental risks associated with benzene exposure raise ongoing public safety concerns.
