A devastating avalanche struck Eiger Mountain, one of the most iconic peaks in the Swiss Alps, around midday on Saturday. Local police from Bern Cantonal have confirmed that several people have been buried under the snow, leading to a large-scale rescue operation. Teams from various rescue organizations have mobilized to search the area for the victims.
Eiger Mountain, standing at 3,967 meters (approximately 13,000 feet), is located close to popular tourist destinations such as Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen, and Wengen. Known for its challenging climbing routes, particularly its infamous north face, the mountain attracts many adventurers and mountaineers each year.
Authorities are continuing to assess the situation and provide updates as the rescue efforts unfold. With winter sports season in full swing, the avalanche serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers associated with mountainous terrain during this time of year.
