NEW YORK (AP) — Justin Timberlake struggled to perform field sobriety tests requiring him to walk a straight line and stand on one leg after police officers pulled him over in the Hamptons in 2024 on suspicion of drunk driving, as indicated by recently released police video footage. The lengthy clip shows Timberlake struggling with the tests and expressing concerns such as, “these are like really hard tests.”
Footage depicts the pop star's stop by Sag Harbor police after allegedly running a stop sign and swerving out of his lane. Officers noted he exited his BMW smelling of alcohol. Timberlake admitted to drinking one martini prior to the incident.
As officers continued to question him about his presence in the area, Timberlake stated, “I’m on a world tour,” to which an officer responded with skepticism, asking for his license. Timberlake was seen feeling flustered, admitting nervousness and questioning why he was being arrested.
Timberlake's legal team initially tried to block the release of the footage, arguing it would invade his privacy and damage his reputation. However, both parties ultimately agreed that the video didn't constitute an unwarranted invasion of personal privacy under the state's public information laws, leading to its release.
Timberlake pleaded guilty to impaired driving in September 2024, resulting in a noncriminal traffic violation and leading to a public safety announcement on the risks of drunk driving as part of his plea deal. His penalties included a fine of $500, 25 hours of community service, and a 90-day revocation of his driving license.
