WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) — A Delaware man, William Stevenson, who was once married to former first lady Jill Biden, is currently in jail facing first-degree murder charges following the tragic death of his wife, Linda Stevenson.

The 77-year-old Stevenson was indicted on Monday after being accused of killing his 64-year-old wife on December 28, 2023, at their Wilmington home. Authorities have reported that he could not secure the $500,000 bail amount required for his release and thus remains incarcerated. Further details about the motive behind the incident have yet to be made public.

Emergency responders were dispatched to the couple's residence shortly after 11 p.m. due to a reported domestic dispute and found Linda unresponsive in the living room. Despite attempts to revive her, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The charges stem from a detailed investigation conducted by Delaware's Department of Justice, which culminated in the grand jury indictment. As of now, it is unclear whether Stevenson has legal representation.

In a twist of historical interest, Stevenson was married to Jill Biden from 1970 until their divorce in 1975. Following this marriage, Jill Biden wed then-U.S. Senator Joe Biden in 1977, who would later become the 46th President of the United States.

A spokesperson for the Biden family declined to comment on the situation. Linda Stevenson, remembered as a devoted mother, grandmother, and an ardent Philadelphia Eagles fan, had a noteworthy career in bookkeeping. Interestingly, her obituary makes no mention of her husband.

William Stevenson is also known for founding the Stone Balloon, a famed music venue in Newark, Delaware, in the early 1970s. In past interviews, he has made disparaging remarks about Jill Biden, referring to their divorce in unflattering terms.
