In brief

Three days post-announcement on humanitarian aid, little to no relief has reached desperate residents of Gaza facing a dire food crisis.

Despite Israel's recent easing of the blockade on humanitarian aid into Gaza, locals report that essential supplies remain scarce. On May 21, 2025, three days after the announcement, reports emerged that limited amounts of food, fuel, and medicine had yet to flow into the region. Israel has claimed that dozens of trucks with supplies crossed the Kerem Shalom checkpoint; however, a United Nations official revealed that the agency hasn't been able to move any of these supplies from the border to local warehouses due to concerns over potential looting.Residents wait in limbo, desperate for sustenance, as a two-month ban on supplies continues to take its toll on the population. "Today we will mostly eat lentils or pasta," lamented Riyadh al-Housari, a 25-year-old from Gaza City. He shared that his family now relies on a single meal each day, highlighting the severity of their situation.According to a U.N.-backed experts panel, the blockade has driven the population to a "critical risk of famine," with projections indicating that tens of thousands of children may face acute malnutrition if restrictions persist. Israel has countered this claim, insisting that the data is flawed and that the blockade aims to coerce Hamas into terms regarding the ongoing conflict and the release of remaining hostages.Earlier in March, Israeli officials instituted a ban on humanitarian aid, asserting that it was necessary to pressure Hamas. As the situation evolves and tension rises with ongoing threats of a significant ground offensive, the distribution of aid remains uncertain, leaving many Gazans in dire need of relief.
