Goldman Sachs' Top Lawyer Departs Amid Epstein Controversy

Kathryn Ruemmler, Goldman Sachs' chief legal officer, has announced her resignation after coming under fire for her relationship with the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Emails disclosed by the US justice department highlight that Ruemmler referred to Epstein as 'Uncle Jeffrey' and accepted numerous lavish gifts from him. In a statement, Ruemmler emphasized the need to put Goldman Sachs' interests first, prompting her decision to resign, effective June 30.

Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon expressed gratitude for her 'sound advice' and acknowledged her role as a mentor within the company. He affirmed her contributions to the firm and respected her decision to resign amidst the scrutiny.

Despite her connections to Epstein, there is no indication of criminal wrongdoing. However, the ongoing revelations have posed a reputational challenge for Goldman Sachs, where Ruemmler was chairing the reputational risk committee.

Ruemmler had joined Goldman Sachs in 2020 after a previous role as White House counsel to former President Barack Obama. Her connection with Epstein has become a focal point of discussion, especially following the release of additional documents related to his legal troubles.

In past communications, Ruemmler expressed admiration for Epstein, insisting that she only knew him as a lawyer and had no knowledge of his criminal activities. Even as details of their interactions raise eyebrows, Ruemmler maintains that her understanding of him was limited to their professional relationship.

The legal industry has seen a wave of resignations in light of continued disclosures regarding Epstein, further complicating the landscape for those previously associated with him.
