In brief

In a heart-wrenching incident at the West Coast Air Show in Saldanha, 112 km north of Cape Town, veteran South African Air Force pilot James O'Connell tragically lost his life during a performance. Witnesses describe a routine display, which turned disastrous when O'Connell's aircraft, an Impala Mark 1, entered a steep dive after losing altitude unexpectedly.

As spectators watched in shock, videos captured the moment the aircraft flipped upside down, returning to its original position before nose-diving into the ground, engulfed in flames. Air show commentator Brian Emmenis, who knew O'Connell well, recounted their final conversation, highlighting the pilot's positive demeanor before the flight. Emmenis expressed his dismay over the loss felt across the aviation community, stating, "South Africa is devastated... it’s a band of brothers in air show flying." Clive Coetzee, the West Coast Air Show organizer, echoed the sentiments of sadness and shock, revealing that a young pilot scheduled to perform subsequently withdrew after witnessing the crash. Both Emmenis and Coetzee have refrained from speculating about the cause, but Emmenis noted that the Impala was maintained in excellent condition before its fateful flight. O'Connell, regarded as a "true aviation legend" with 36 years of flying experience, will be sorely missed by his colleagues and the broader aviation community.
